Status quo & issue
There is a distinct lack of knowledge on when and in what condition EoL e-bike batteries are taken back at specific collection points. There is also very little knowledge on the service life and the final resting place for e-bike batteries. Furthermore, urgent clarification is needed on future scenarios concerning the future number and financial means regarding the take-back of e-bike batteries.
It is important to close loops as well as avoid improper recycling, including the grey zone of unauthorised recycling of lithium-ion batteries.
Objective & possible solution
The “Identification of Lithium Batteries in the Material Flow of the National Take-back Scheme – with a Sorting Campaign” project is intended to create a better understanding of the service life and the condition of EoL e-bike lithium-ion batteries during the take-back process. At the same time, the aim is to gain an insight on these specific collection points and where the e-bike lithium-ion batteries finally end up. The results of the project will be used to develop a concept for a long-term finance and recycling strategy for e-bike batteries, thereby providing solutions for the take-back, recycling and financial aspect, as well as minimizing the financial risks.
Implementation strategy
The condition of EoL e-bike batteries is currently unknown when they are taken to the collection points.
As the number of e-bikes is continually on the rise, it is to be expected that the quantity of batteries returned to collection points will increase too. This project is aimed at developing long-term strategies for recycling EoL e-bike batteries, including the financial aspect of such a scheme.
