Status quo & issue
The EU’s secure supply of mineral raw materials is not always guaranteed and/or the supply is associated with supply risks. Consequently, guidelines should be introduced to improve the level of knowledge pertaining to raw materials until 2050, the use of secondary raw materials (SRM) and raw materials deemed as critical, so-called CRMs.
Objective & possible solution
As part of this, the “Future availability of secondary raw materials” project aims to develop knowledge concerning the availability, the potential and usability of secondary raw materials (SRM) in the European Union. In this respect, a special focus must be put on developing solutions that are environmentally friendly as well as the economic handling and recycling of lithium iron phosphate batteries to create a zero-emission secondary raw material.
Implementation strategy
This project intends to collect and summarise data on the quantity and composition of six waste streams in the EU, with the aim of determining resource flows of secondary raw materials within these waste streams. Based on information gained, methods are then to be developed to improve the level of knowledge on secondary raw materials in the EU.
