Status quo & issue
Based on the new EU Regulation on Batteries and Waste Batteries, portable battery manufacturers will, in future, be responsible for adhering to the targets for the use of recyclates. Initially, this concerns denoting the percentage of recyclate in their products. Minimum levels for the raw materials cobalt, lead, nickel and lithium must be reached by 2030.
There is still a great deal of ignorance concerning the possible uses of end-of-life (EoL) recyclates in the current and future lithium-ion battery (LiB) production processes.
Objective & possible solution
The “Improvement of Material Cycles for Lithium Batteries and Reutilisation in New Products” project aims to adhere to the planned guidelines on the content of recyclates for cobalt, nickel, lead and lithium that have been stipulated in the new EU Regulation on Batteries and Waste Batteries. Furthermore, the aim is to find solutions for using recyclates and increasing the amount of recyclate used in the production of lithium-ion batteries and improving the eco-balance by means of other methods.
