Status quo & issue
There will be significantly more lithium-ion batteries (LiB) to deal with in the future as a result of the increasing number of electric cars on the road. Second life applications using lithium-ion batteries are not possible for electro-mobility due to ageing processes.
Nevertheless, the service life of a battery can be extended thanks to second life applications. The general requirements for raw materials and energy can be reduced.
Objective & possible solution
By using second-hand lithium-ion batteries in second life applications, raw material requirements and energy needs can be reduced in these usage scenarios.
The aims of the feasibility study concerning opportunities and limits of lithium-ion batteries in second life are, for instance, to examine the legal framework, ascertain the anticipated service life of the EoL lithium-ion batteries and narrowing down the possible application scenarios.
