Status quo & issue
Due to the growing amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) as well as the rise in energy densities of specific battery systems, a check needs to be done on whether the current guidelines, logistics systems and safety procedures are still adequate and practical.
This is particularly true in face of the growing number of fires occurring at waste recycling companies and in the retail trade that are apparently happening during the take-back process of EoL lithium-ion batteries and the obligations imposed on taking back waste electrical and electronic equipment in supermarkets.
Objective & possible solution
The “Monitoring and assessing the safety concept on registering lithium-ion batteries as part of the battery take-back and the take-back of battery-operated waste electrical equipment (WEEE)” project is intended to heighten the safety aspect associated with registering the EoL lithium batteries and waste electrical and electronic equipment as part of the statutory Extended Producer Responsibility.
Interviews are currently being held with experts from the fields of science and industry to obtain latest knowledge on the status of safety risks.
